First Baptist Church, Brandenburg, Kentucky

Our History - His Faithfulness

On a winter evening, February 11, 1829, a church was gathered in the home of Henry Yeakey of Brandenburg, Kentucky.  With twenty-six members, it was named the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church with Simeon Buchanon as its first pastor.  One hundred eighty-two years and forty-two pastors later, the First Baptist Church of Brandenburg has over 700 members and stands as a testimony to the faithfulness of God and His people.  Through difficult times, name changes, wars, fire and a devastating tornado, the First Baptist Church has stood as a “city on a hill” in its community.

In the early years, the church shared its pastor with other churches, only having services once or twice a month.  Today, the church employs two full-time and three part-time staff members.  From the first building in 1838 to the current plant of three buildings and two houses, the church membership has been willing to step out on faith to build what was needed for ministry.  With receipts totaling more than $440,000 last year, the church has come a long way from collecting member-to-member to make up a pastor’s salary over-due by more than a year.  From the beginning of the Women’s Missionary Society in 1892, the church has supported local and international mission efforts through prayer and financial gifts, having sent some of its own members and pastors to the mission fields of the world.

Realizing that we stand on the shoulders of those who have gone before us, we are committed to being “the light of the world” to our community and beyond.  Recognizing God’s faithfulness to our church, we pray that our faithfulness to His work will stand as a testimony to future generations.
